GOLFING STARS OF THE FUTURE?
These aspiring young golfers have just completed the first stage of their Clubgolf training and are delighted to be holding their well-earned Clubgolf Passports and Certificates. Since late April, 17 children between 6 and 12 years of age have been coached by 8 volunteer members from Dunnikier Park Golf Club – now qualified to PGA Level 1 standard, on the elementary techniques of playing golf. Dunnikier Park is one of the few golf clubs in Fife that is participating in Clubgolf. It runs its coaching programme in partnership with Fife Active Schools (involving Valley, Capshard and St Maries Primary Schools) under the banner of The Scottish Golf Union’s national Clubgolf initiative. Ewan Wishart, Dunnikier Park’s Clubgolf Coordinator commented ‘‘We are delighted at the numbers of youngsters joining the programme at Dunnikier. We currently have 6 girls and 11 boys taking part on our Stage 1 coaching programme, and the positive feedback from the kids is encouraging for everyone involved. In addition to learning basic golf skills, having fun is an important element of the coaching. Their enthusiasm shown augurs well for them staying in the game. I would like to thank the coaches for their commitment and the parents/ guardians for their continuing support.’’ These youngsters now have the opportunity to progress to the Club’s Junior Section run by Brian Mutch and receive subsidised lessons from Gregor Whyte, the Club’s PGA Professional and Clubgolf head coach. Club Captain Neil Crooks is delighted with the success of Clubgolf. ‘‘The national trend shows the average age of Club golfers to be rising. 70 (12%) of our members are under 18, and we aim to increase that percentage. Clubgolf along with our subsidised junior coaching programme is a key part of that strategy.’’
